One of the primary responsibilities of a General Assembly representative is to protect the health and safety of constituents.
Residents need to be heard.
While knocking on over 13,000 doors and speaking with IL65 residents this campaign, Linda has repeatedly heard the concerns of residents about the increasing amount of dust and noise caused daily by the LaFargeHolcim quarry in South Elgin. Residents are worried about the dangers to their health; they are frustrated that their activism isn’t getting results. They want help. They want someone to listen.
The LaFargeHolcim Stone Quarry is an “underground” mining quarry that processes and loads crushed limestone, sand and gravel 6 days a week. Particulates become airborne and escape the quarry. Diesel powered vehicles operate and idle 16 hours daily. The result of these operations is noise and clouds of dust and diesel exhaust soot emissions that spread during the day and night through neighborhoods and houses.
Airborne particulates pollute the air and are harmful to health. People should not have to stop having outdoor picnics because the dust is so bad.
As a scientist and small-business owner, Linda understands the impact of pollution on families. In her career as a microbiologist, she worked on energy conservation issues and methods to eliminate air and water pollution. She worked on water reuse and recovery in paper mills, reducing microbial contamination and reducing costs to businesses.
We need experts, like Linda, who can implement environmental solutions that save money and create jobs.
Linda will stand up for families and communities
Linda will use her expertise to seek and identify public policy measures that will protect the health of residents. She has the skills to effectively work with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and the Village of South Elgin to ensure that complaints will be investigated, and that quarry dust and noise will be monitored. Linda will advocate for public policy actions that will enforce regulations governing environmental mitigations and implement stricter rules if needed.
Please vote on or before November 5th.
